– Hear hear, at least on the first part. I find some of the arguments about infrastructure questionable, since in many cases paving roads is good for bikes too, and building highways for interstate commerce reduces the cost of goods, theoretically, for all citizens. But, yeah, gas subsidies and the...

I’m way more concerned about the fact that Mexicanos say “cada ocho días” when they mean “weekly.” But yeah, this is pretty strange too.

– Gonna disagree with you, Sasha Frere-Jones. Sometimes a good writer coming in from outside the BS is exactly what we need. This stuff isn’t rocket science. I would encourage you to profile an Al Qaeda member, but maybe that’s why I’m not a magazine editor.

FLUXBLOG 2002 SURVEY MIX →
I will now drown in nostalgia.
perpetua:
I am celebrating the 10th anniversary of Fluxblog with a series of survey mixes for each year the site has existed. First up: 2002! 140 songs on 8 discs, with music from Missy Elliot, Kylie Minogue, Wilco, Spoon, LCD Soundsystem, Interpol, Cam’ron, The Kills, The Rapture, Cee Lo Green, Coldplay, Ashanti, Andrew W.K., Sleater-Kinney, Clinic, Sonic Youth,...
I asked the yoisthisracist guy about this, but you can’t embed video when you ask him a question. I told him to maybe Google it, but I’m sure he gets a lot of e-mails so this one didn’t make the cut. Anyway, this is a South African mixed-race guy making fun of black people in the U.S., which, OK, maybe a tough call, but the Jay Leno audience’s unhinged laughter made me feel...

– The LA Times takes on the franalero eradication project in Polanco. There’s not a direct quote from the “many” workers who are complaining, but I do wonder if it’s occurred to any of them to take public transportation.

It follows that Kobe must be a huge Sarver fan, right? His biggest ally?
In any case, the knock against the Phoenix-LA rivalry since like forever has been that LA didn’t really care about Phoenix all that much. I think that’s still true of the Laker fans, but glad to see that we get under the skin of the only Laker that matters.

That’s what the franaleros chanted on their march to protest Mayor Marcelo Ebrard’s plan to put parking meters in Polanco. The franaleros. Self-employed people who charge people protection money for parking on public streets. I just, I can’t.

I want to thank Bill Simmons for doing a makeup column to make me excited about basketball after that crappy one yesterday about the fantasy league for people who have even more time on their hands than the people who normally do fantasy leagues.
This thing is like that thing. Man, I miss being able to be seriously outraged about people’s lack of courtesy to each other in public thoroughfares without questioning whether I was just being culturally insensitive because I live in another country. Can we all just MOVE IT ALONG PLEASE?

Sorry if this sounds snobby! It’s just, ugh, this is all reminding me of how Eminem gets airplay on rock stations. Cultural signifiers and aesthetic preferences becoming confused and elevating stuff for possibly weird reasons.
So don’t be snobby! Tell us what you would suggest instead.

The Metro goes plastic →
Mexico City’s Metro will share a plastic card for electronic fare payments with its above-ground cousin, the Bus Rapid Transit system called Metrobús. La Jornada reports that this will mean finally getting rid of the little paper Metro tickets for good, and that the plan is to eventually use the same system for other bus fares. Hopefully, as is the case with the Metrobús, you’ll be...

'Better Values' for Pesero Drivers →
Milenio looks into a horrific pesero bus accident in Mexico state, in which the driver tried to pass another bus by moving into the opposite lane. A state official says the solution is to teach drivers better values. I’m thinking enforcement of the law might help, too. It’s not like these guys don’t do stuff like this all the time.
All aboard the Puebla Express →
Mexico’s transportation ministry is laying out plans for a passenger train from Mexico City to Puebla, El Universal reports. That would pretty much cement Pueba’s annexation into the Mexico City metropolitan area, wouldn’t it? (There would also be a stop in Teotihuacán, which would be a nice bonus for tourists.)
